Indie Rights, Inc., a new distribution company formed by the partners of Nelson Madison Films to help independent filmmakers find a broader audience for their films, has just announced plans to distribute a new, shocking feature documentary titled Skid Row, starring Pras Michel (of Fugees hip-hop music group fame).  Indie Rights, Inc. is the first internet aggregator of digital rights to emerge in the marketplace.

Skid Row was shot in downtown Los Angeles in the area known as Skid Row, the largest homeless population of any metropolitan area in the entire United States with more than 70,000 homeless people.  “After experiencing personally what it’s like to live on the streets, it is now my mission to educate our communities about the lack of affordable housing, drug and alcohol addiction, and inadequate health services that contribute to this growing problem,” said Pras.  “It was a horrifying experience that will stay with me forever.”  Pras and a very special group of filmmakers went “undercover” to document the homeless experience.  Pras was dropped off on Skid Row with $9, a small tent and a backpack and left to fend for himself for nine days, while being filmed from a van with tinted windows and a small camera hidden in his clothes.

Indie Rights plans to distribute the film nationally through a series of “grass roots” screenings designed to raise awareness of the issues about the homeless sparking action by those in a position to help financially, those who will raise awareness through activism, and those who will raise awareness through education.  An educational outreach program for schools is also being designed.  The film will also be available for sale on every major online retail site for purchase, download and rental with 50% of the proceeds going to The Midnight Mission and PrAsperity, a charitable organization founded by Pras.

Indie Rights catalogue of festival films is already available on many major websites including Jaman.com, iMoovie.com, EZTakes.com, Amazon.com and b_side.com with additional sites being added weekly.  Later this year their films will be available on sites with more familiar names, such as Walmart.com, CinemaNow, Netflix, and MovieLink.

Most recently, Indie Rights has entered negotiations for a joint TV broadcasting deal for its catalogue of films in conjunction with a major television network’s website. This program series will broadcast independent feature films and will be supported by additional website materials including interviews with the filmmakers, film trailers and sales of the DVD’s.

Nelson Madison Films started as an independent film producer and currently has a development slate of six films, including a contemporary action adventure, “Delivered” that propels the audience though the turmoil experienced by a young vet anxious to return to a normal life, but caught in a web of betrayal, murder and international theft.  The company felt the need to pursue new forms of distribution for its films after playing the festival circuit and experiencing firsthand the huge number of great independent films that never find an audience.  Nelson Madison Films’ “Shifted,” was the first independent film to be sold on Amazon’s Unbox downloading service.

Determined to do something to help bring about change, the partners, Linda Nelson and Michael Madison, founded Indie Rights.  As the movie world turns digital, Indie Rights is well positioned to provide independent film distribution to meet the demand.
